It is late December, on the bus from Hamburg to Berlin, a familiar journey. Schubert’s Winterreise and the Orgelbuchlein of Bach block out an arguing couple. Looking beyond, the big flat fields and pine forests of the North are decked with snow. The sun, always a companion in the distance, rises and falls with the contour of the Autobahn. It turns to orange, then red, then slips away.
